What do you want in a spade?
Outside Frame vs. Inside Frame

- Inside frames are more compact than outside frames.
- Inside frames are equipped with scraper rings to reduce rootball disturbance when
retracting the shovels. They are also used to press the rootball into the basket, thus
creating a tighter package. - Outside frames offer more room for harvesting bushy or multi-stemmed trees and
shrubs. - The majority of nurseryman are using inside frames, but deciding what is best
suited for your particular application is most important.
Shovel Type

There are three shovel types – Truncated, Semi-Truncated, and Cone. The most popular
in the Nursery industry is the truncated shovel type because of its easy to handle shape
and size. All of our spades have a 25 degree classification regardless of the shovel
configuration.
- Truncated – This shovel type is the shortest of the three with a relatively large bottom
enabling it to stand on its own. - Semi-Truncated – This shovel type is a mix between the truncated and cone shovels.
These shovels offer a longer shovel depth; increasing the versatility and reducing the
bottom size. - Cone – This shovel configuration is suited for applications where tap-roots and hard,
dry digging conditions are common. These spades are taller and wider but our compact
design minimizes the overall size.
Leg Options

Using one spade to dig several different sizes of rootballs is very important for some customers. This is where the subject of legs and leg type presents itself.
- Hydraulic Legs - Gives the nurserymen the ability to drive down a row and dig different size rootballs on the fly without having to manually adjust any leg sets. This leg set does not require leveling like many other leg sets therefore it increases both the quality of the finished product and the productivity of the operator. This option is available for both inside and outside frames, and it can be adapted to existing spades.
Standard Legs – Included with each spade for no additional charge. They have an effective range of
12”, enabling the spade to dig a rootball up to 12” smaller in diameter. With this leg type the operator
needs to level the frame before digging.- Spacer Plates – This leg option is size specific – each spacer plate is intended for one specific rootball size. This leg set simplifies the leveling process as well as scraping and packing the rootball.
- Adjustable Front Legs – This option includes a leg system on the front of the spade that offers 12” of
adjustment. This leg set is intended to help level the spade but does not offer any scraping or packing
capability.

Gate Lock
Each spade is equipped with a gate locking feature in
the control valve.
- Spades 42” and larger are also equipped with a mechanical gate lock to ensure the frame remains locked during operation.
- Spades 40” and smaller do not have a mechanical lock, for faster production efficiency.
